Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technologies Program (AICCTP) Workshop

Next Generation Telecommunications Networks: Privacy and Security Challenges, Standards, Regulatory Interventions, and Policy Framework

Tuesday, November 15, 2022

Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

Venue: Chancery Pavilion Hotel

135 Residency Road, Bengaluru 560025

With the explosive growth in wireless data traffic and smart devices in recent years and the evolving transition to 5G/6G networks, there is a critical need to address the key privacy and security challenges that may arise. In this workshop, we focus on Wi-Fi sensing based on processing the channel state information (CSI), through which wireless networks can potentially leak users’ personal information, even when the data is encrypted. Unlike sensor or video-based approaches, Wi-Fi sensing can be carried out unobtrusively using low-cost devices.

This workshop will present an overview of the range of cybersecurity threats that arise in the context of Wi-Fi sensing and the kinds of personal and usage information that can be inferred by malicious actors. We will also report the results of parallel experiments conducted in India and Australia (at universities in Sydney and IIT Madras) to test the validity and generality of applying Wi-Fi sensing to harvest diverse information. Specifically, these experiments tested the efficacy of Wi-Fi sensing for network traffic classification and spatial monitoring. This will be followed by an interactive exploration of possible counter-strategies and how standards and policies can be developed to reduce the privacy and security threats without impeding potential technological innovations.

(This workshop and the related research are funded by a grant from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia, under the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technologies Program)
