ACM BuildSys 2019 Workshop on

Enforcing IoT Security in the Built Environment (BuildIoTSec)

One-day workshop, 13-14 November 2019, New York, NY, USA

Workshop theme:

Tools and techniques for a built environment to enforce security, rather than trusting IoT devices. What can infrastructure do to restrict, monitor, diagnose, prevent, and otherwise stymie security threats within a semi-trusted system.

Cyber security is of paramount importance in many situations in the built environment, and many potential IoT deployments are blocked because IT departments and other institutions are not willing to accept the risk. Furthermore, the large number of organizations involved in such complex deployments means that it's much more likely for devices be compromised. Rather than assuming, or trusting, a device to "do the right thing" when it comes to security, the infrastructure itself, including both software and hardware, should do everything to prevent malicious intent: it's the immune system for a building.

This workshop will focus on tools and techniques for enforcing cyber security, including, but not limited to:

Work should focus on the underlying principles that infrastructure can use to enforce security of malicious actors in a built environment.

The workshop is expected to be a combination of paper presentations, panel sessions, and interactive threat-assessment exercises. The built environment provides a complex and diverse ecosystem for IoT systems that requires new perspectives on security and techniques for mitigation. This workshop is intended to provide direct interaction with other researchers and practitioners in this space, cultivating a stronger security stance through shared experiences and perspectives.
