October 2023– Congratulations to Dr Shaghik Atakaramians for being awaded the 2024 Zhenyi Wang Award for Excellence. This international award recognises outstanding female contributors to Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz wave science, technology and applications. This is awarded for her achievements in the design and demonstration of high performance Terahertz waveguides and waveguide-based devices.

July 2023– Congratulations to Terahertz Innovation Group and EET Telecommunication Team (Dr Shaghik Atakaramians, Dr Deepak Mishra, Prof Aruna Seneviratne, Prof Jinhong Yuan) on being awarded the National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grants (NISDRG) for “Terahertz Backscattering Device for High-Resolution and Single-shot Localisation”.

February 2023– Congratulations to Mr Qigejian Wang for receiving 2022 Terahertz Innovation Group Student Award for his dedication and perseverance to research activities in the group.

November 2022– Terahertz Innovation Group had the oppertunity to show case the existing terahertz photonic based communication system for D-band to attendees of AI for 6G Communications Workshop. The workshop explored the applicability of AI technologies for 6G communications and networks, share use cases, and investigated research opportunities and challenges.

October 2022– Congratulations to Dr Deepak Mishra for being awarded a fellowship of 426,118 AUD from the Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) to carry out research on Intelligent Physical Layer Security Protocols for Backscattering in IoT. This project aims to develop novel theories, system models, and energy-efficient optimisation algorithms to fight against eavesdropping and jamming attacks in backscatter communication networks.

September 2022– The group had the pleasure to host Associate Prof Yasuaki Monnai from Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo. A/Prof Monnai has delivered a talk on "Terahertz beam steering in application to free-space sensing" and visit School of EET Telecommunication Laboratoies.

July 2022– Ms Zetong Zhao (thesis student from Master of Eng), receives the best postgraduate poster prize at IEEE NSW Unite 2022 poster competition.

June 2022– The group has secured Faculty of Engineering International Seed Grant to establish activites on Terahertz Sensing for Next Generation Wireless Vision. Congratulations to Dr Deepak Mishra and Dr Shaghik Atakaramians.

March 2022– The group has secured an ARC Linkage grant (in partnership with Ericsson AB and University of Adelaide). The projects aims to create a novel class of polymer terahertz fibres to replace the current lossy wires that are bandwidth limited.

December 2021– The group hosted 8-th Australian and New Zealand Terahertz workshop. The workshop started with a welcome by Prof Julien Epps Head of School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunication at UNSW. The guest speaker of the workshop was Prof Benjamin Eggleton, Director of The University of Sydney Nano Institute, who shared with us the cutting-edge research happening in microwave photonics and multi-sensory fusion and the outlook. There was a diverse and incredible line up of speakers and poster presentations from 15 institutions in Australia and New Zealand.

October 2021– The group has secured Faculty of Engineering International Seed Grant to upgrade the current CW system to a D-band photonics based terahertz communication system. Congratulations to the investigatory team Dr Shaghik Atakaramians, Dr Deepak Mishra, Prof Jinhong Yuan, Dr Wing Kwan Ng, Prof Aruna Seneviratne, Prof Gang-ding Peng and Prof Francois Ladouceur.

August 2021– The group has secured UNSW Faculty of Engineering Infrastructure Grant to establish terahertz optical-based D-band (130-170 GHz) communication link.

May 2019– Muhammad Talal Ali Khan has been awarded a 2019 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for his potential contributions to the field of photonics or related field. The Society awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 84 outstanding SPIE student members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated, selected and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, Chaired by SPIE volunteer Jeremy Bos.

January 2018– Dr Shaghik Atakaramians has been awarded University of New South Wales (UNSW) Scientia fellowship, a very prestigious and competitive research focused academic program that aims to attract outstanding researchers within and outside of Australia with the objective of boosting UNSW’s culture of research excellence.
